Suit Actor & Stuntman Haruo Nakajima, who played the original Godzilla, dies

Legendary suit actor & Stuntman Haruo Nakajima, who played the original Godzilla in the 1954 classic, died of pneumonia at the age of 88.

Haruo Nakajima stomped over miniature bridges and buildings in a rubber suit and gave the world Godzilla, the fire-breathing, screeching monster that became Japan’s star cultural export.

The film went on to become a mega-series and inspired several Hollywood spin-offs.

Besides playing Godzilla, Nakajima also portrayed other iconic Toho monsters such as Rodan in 1956’s Rodan, Baragon in 1965’s Frankenstein Conquers the World, and Gaira in 1966’s War of the Gargantuas, just to name a few.

Recent movies now make use of computer graphics/animation to create the monster. However, many fans believe that Nakajima’s was the definitive Godzilla. The actor himself agreed with that assertion, saying in 2014: “I am the original, the real thing,. My Godzilla was the best.”
