Until a few years back, smartphone manufacturers focused on selling phones with really big screens. Then they shifted their focus on having bigger camera lenses on their phones. Now they are adding many more camera lenses to their smartphones.
Well, we are not complaining, those who love to take pictures and videos with their smartphones are only going to love it more (using their smartphones). It’s just that some of these features will take time to be made available to the end-users.
Smartphones of future may have 16 camera lenses
Korean tech company LG has patented a device with hexadecimal cameras, which beats the current smartphone camera combinations. So is this the future of mobile photography?
Dual cameras on smartphones is common, some smartphones even use three (or four) cameras, but 16 camera lenses is not yet heard of.
While there’s definitely a race among Phone camera makers to add more lenses to their mobile setup, LG’s future phone could feature a whopping 16 lenses, via LetsGoDigital.
Recently, LG was granteded a patent for a hexadecimal camera setup by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
As per the patent, the camera lenses were placed in such a way that the different lenses would capture images at different perspectives.
The patent also reveals describes combining the different camera angles to create a miniature film, sort of like a superpowered version of things like Apple’s Live Photos or Lytro’s adjustable light field images. The patent also claims that it’d be able to use the different datasets from the different lenses to cut out things from the image (say, for things like portrait mode or even replacing a background entirely).
While 16 lenses may seem too many right now, the possible applications for this setup seem interesting.
For example, you can create 3D videos, move a subject to a different angle in a photo, or even edit/remove parts of a photo once you’ve captured it.

All this is not possible without a full suite of lenses.
But what about taking a simple selfie using this 16-lens camera? According to the patent, LG will attach a mirror to the back of the phone to accomplish that (combining low-tech with such a future-tech camera?).
However, this is just a patent, and as we have seen in the past, it may not even get to production. But as phone makers battle to push phone cameras to the limit, hexadecimal camera could be a reality in the future.
Smartphones to come with bigger camera lenses
A popular blog that covers Sony camera news, claims that the Japanese electronics giant is developing a large camera lens that users could attach to their smartphones using NFC technology.
The rumored camera lens would come with its own sensor, battery and memory, which means the users will be able to take higher-quality pictures than the ones that currently are available on their smartphones.
And though Sony has not confirmed anything on this new development, Samsung and Nokia have officially unveiled smartphones with significantly better cameras than the ones offered by their peers. For example, Samsung Galaxy & Nokia Lumia.
The move toward these higher-quality camera smartphones is, of course, being influenced by the growing popularity of picture and video apps. Instagram, Vine, Snapchat and others have become extremely popular with the users, in recent times.
It seems the big boys such as Sony, Samsung and Nokia believe that users may be willing to pay a little more if they can take excellent photos using their smartphones, even if it means a slight bulkier instrument. And that is why they’re betting big on smartphones with bigger camera lenses.
